UN: ISIL has 40,000 fighters in Afghanistan

The United Nations says there are currently 40,000 ISIS fighters in Afghanistan, including 2,000 foreigners.

The UN Security Council’s Sanctions Monitoring Committee said in a statement yesterday that ISIL currently has 40,000 fighters in Afghanistan, most of whom were released during the fall of the previous government.

Expressing concern over the security situation in Afghanistan, the committee said the number of ISIL fighters in the country was increasing.

Meanwhile, Ken McCallone, the British director of internal intelligence, recently warned that Afghanistan was once again becoming a safe haven for terrorist groups.

“We see some people trying to travel to Afghanistan, so we are watching the situation with our allies,” he said.

The British Homeland Security chief has expressed concern that Afghanistan, like Syria, could become a rallying point for British extremists.
