US Ambassador to the United Nations: Imposing a compulsory hijab on women by the Taliban is a concern
The US ambassador to the United Nations, in response to the Taliban’s recent decision to make hijab mandatory for women in Afghanistan, said the Taliban order sent a worrying message to the world.
“The Taliban have proved once again that they can do anything,” said Linda Thomas Greenfield, chair of the Security Council and US ambassador to the United Nations. We have said from day one that the criterion for judging the Taliban is their behavior, not their professionalism.
Stressing that the Taliban’s behavior on Mother’s Day contains a very worrying message, he added: “What they did today is unreasonable.” I’m sure they will do more in the future.
The US Ambassador to the United Nations pledged that US support for Afghan women would continue.
Meanwhile, the Taliban’s Ministry of Promoting Virtue and Prohibiting Virtue recently announced in a decree on women’s hijab that women should cover their faces in public places and that their parents would be punished if they violated them.
