The Australian Foreign Minister called the Taliban’s decision on women’s hijab disappointing

Following the continuing reactions to the Taliban’s order on the headscarf for women, the Australian Foreign and Women’s Minister said that the Taliban’s decision was disappointing.

Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Payne tweeted today that she was deeply disappointed to see that the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan had intensified.

He added: “Australia and its partners will judge the Taliban based on their actions, not their words.”

Recently, the Taliban issued a decree on the hijab of women stating that women should cover their faces in public places and that their parents would be punished if they violated it. The Taliban’s decision provoked domestic and international reactions.

US State Department spokesman said the US government would increase pressure on the Taliban if they did not repeal their order to make hijab mandatory for women and girls in Afghanistan.

“We spoke directly with the Islamic Emirate about this,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told a news conference yesterday in response to the Taliban decision. If these decisions do not change, we will use the facilities at our disposal.

He said if the Taliban did not repeal the order, the US government and its allies would increase pressure on the group.
