The Qatari foreign minister called for more international engagement with the Taliban

The Qatari foreign minister called on the international community to engage with the Taliban and said that the situation in Afghanistan could not be monitored by imposing sanctions on the group.

Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani was quoted as saying that the West should increase its engagement with the Taliban because it could not monitor the situation in Afghanistan by imposing sanctions on the group.

“We will see an increase in extremism and an economic crisis that has already begun, and this will only lead people to become more radical and more in conflict,” he said.

The Qatari foreign minister added that if the international community had become more involved with the Taliban regime after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, it could have prevented some more radical Islamist actions.

Qatar is one of the countries with close ties to the Taliban and also hosts the group’s political bureau.

Earlier in the day, the Qatari foreign minister called on the world to take part in humanitarian efforts for Afghanistan, saying that instead of isolating Afghans, we should see serious steps on the part of Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.
