UNAMA: The Taliban have not respected international human rights norms since coming to power

The head of UNAMA said at the UN Security Council meeting about Afghanistan that the Taliban are facing increasing governance challenges.

According to Reuters, Marks Potzel, head of the United Nations Deputy Office in Afghanistan, said at the UN Security Council meeting held about Afghanistan, that since the Taliban came to power, this organization has always been busy with humanitarian and human needs in this country.

According to him, it has been a year since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan and this group has not respected the norms of the international community regarding human rights, especially the rights of women and girls, and this is one of the reasons why the Taliban government has not been recognized by any country.

He added that Afghanistan is a part of this international system and the Taliban must abide by their international obligations. Potzel added that the Taliban are currently seeking recognition based on the fact that they have territorial control over Afghanistan.

In this meeting, he also said that the sanctions against the Taliban have affected the Afghan economy and that humanitarian aid alone cannot curb the economic crisis in this country.

The head of UNAMA stressed that Afghanistan has not recovered from the interventions of foreign powers, adding that none of these interventions have achieved their plans.

Potzel Afroude: “All of them have changed Afghanistan in ways that were unexpected and often not beneficial. Despite the huge resources that have been consumed in the past decades, Afghanistan is not significantly developed, but vulnerable and in need of international assistance.”

The head of UNAMA recently said that the future stability of Afghanistan is based on meeting the needs of the Afghan people, protecting their rights and reflecting the country’s diversity in all government structures.
