UNAMA: Afghanistan is the source of 85% of opium in the world

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced the meeting of the special representative of this organization for Afghanistan with Abdul Haq Akhund, deputy of counter-narcotics in the Ministry of Interior of the Taliban.

The UNAMA announcement states that Roza Otunbayeva, the United Nations Special Representative for Afghanistan, met with Haji Abdul Haq Akhund, the deputy of counter-narcotics in the Ministry of Interior of the caretaker government of the Taliban.

According to UNAMA’s announcement, in this meeting, the two sides discussed drug prohibition, efforts to treat drug addicts, eliminate opium, awareness about the harms of drugs, and alternative livelihoods.

In this announcement, the United Nations Special Representative for Afghanistan Roza Otenbayeva said that Afghanistan is the source of 85% of opium in the world.

It should be remembered that previously, Hebatullah Akhundzadeh, the leader of the Taliban, had issued an order to ban the cultivation of narcotic drugs throughout Afghanistan.

In this order, he said that if someone violates this order, his crop will be destroyed and the violator will be dealt with according to Islamic Sharia.
