The Chargé d’Affaires of the British Embassy in Afghanistan emphasized the dialogue with the Taliban

Hugo Shorter, the chargé d’affaires of the British Embassy in Afghanistan, whose mission has just ended, has emphasized the dialogue with the Taliban.

Mr Shorter tweeted: “For better or worse, Britain and Afghanistan share a long history. This means that the people of Britain and Afghanistan have a real bond. Therefore, our commitment to work for a more stable and prosperous future for Afghanistan remains constant.

He added: “Our priority has been to support 28 million Afghans in need. Since April 2021, the UK has provided more than $600 million in humanitarian aid, reaching millions of Afghans – and with other aid averted full-blown famine last winter.”

Mr. Shorter further said that he interacted with the Taliban and the Afghan society during the past year and came to the conclusion that without dialogue there is no progress after years of conflict and further isolation will not help the Afghan people.

Britain has not yet announced a replacement for Mr. Shorter.
