United Nations: Humanitarian aid is currently preventing the crisis in Afghanistan

Ramez Al-Akbarov, the deputy special representative of the United Nations in Afghanistan, says that Afghanistan is at its peak and humanitarian aid can prevent famine, disease outbreaks and excessive deaths in this country.

He tweeted that the immediate priority now is to maintain the humanitarian response in the current operational environment as best as possible, prevent famine, prevent disease outbreaks and prevent excessive deaths.

The needs in the country will increase unless the humanitarian climate improves and donors act urgently to activate aid agencies to sustain the world’s largest response, the UN Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan said.

He added that in 2023, $4.62 billion is needed to help 23.7 million people and prevent hunger, disease and death.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan previously tweeted that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan has increased from 6.3 million in 2019 to 28.3 million in 2023.

This institution added that about 6 million people are currently facing emergency levels of food insecurity in Afghanistan and are on the verge of famine.
