Iranian Delegation in Kabul Discusses Afghan Prisoner Transfers
Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, said yesterday (Thursday) that an Iranian delegation has arrived in Kabul to discuss the situation of prisoners between the two countries with the officials of the Islamic Emirate.
According to Fitrat, Afghan citizens imprisoned in Iran are expected to be transferred to Kabul.
Regarding the delegation’s visit, Hamdullah Fitrat stated: “A delegation from Iran’s Ministry of Justice has come to Kabul to hold talks and meetings with some Islamic Emirate officials on issues related to prisoners in the two countries. This is a good initiative to transfer Afghan prisoners, allowing them to serve the remainder of their sentences in their homeland.”
This comes as several Afghan citizens imprisoned in Iran have recently been executed there.
Meanwhile, some activists in the field of migrant rights view diplomatic dialogues for the release and exchange of prisoners as a significant step for prisoners.
“Diplomatic dialogues for the release and exchange of prisoners are very positive; however, it is necessary that these dialogues include special efforts for the release of migrants and prisoners detained due to economic problems or lack of access to a competent legal attorney,” Asifa Stanekzai, a migrant rights activist, told .
“Solutions to all conflicts can be found through dialogue. Iranians signed an agreement on the extradition of criminals with the previous government, so the fact that their delegation has traveled to Afghanistan and met with members of the interim government is a positive step,” said Mohammad Zalmay Afghanyar, a political analyst.
In recent years, various reports have been published about the mistreatment of Afghan migrants, particularly in Iran and Pakistan, while on the other hand, dozens of Afghan citizens imprisoned in these countries have been released.
Earlier, the Iranian deputy for legal and international affairs stated that nearly 95% of Iran’s foreign prisoners are Afghan citizens.
