Qomi, Muttaqi Discuss Expanding Tehran-Kabul Ties
In a farewell meeting with acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, and the outgoing Special Representative of the President and acting Ambassador of Iran to Kabul, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, discussed bilateral relations between Kabul and Tehran as well as regional developments.
During the meeting, Amir Khan Muttaqi praised the efforts of Kazemi Qomi during his tenure. He also emphasized that the Islamic Emirate is ready to work with the new Iranian ambassador to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Zia Ahmad Takal, Deputy Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said: “The Foreign Minister stated that the Ministry is ready to work with the new Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to expand bilateral relations.”
Hassan Kazemi Qomi was appointed Iran’s Ambassador to Kabul on December 17, 2022, after Bahador Aminian.
Coordination for hosting a conference on Afghanistan’s regional cooperation initiative, attended by representatives and ambassadors from over ten countries in Kabul, as well as the second meeting of the Regional Contact Group on Afghanistan in Tehran, are considered significant achievements of Kazemi Qomi.
In a separate meeting yesterday, Kazemi Qomi also emphasized the need to fight terrorism and strengthen the initiative of the Regional Contact Group in discussions with China’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan.
Mohammad Omar Nehzat, a political analyst, said: “Kazemi Qomi worked to foster greater engagement between the Islamic Emirate and Iran in the dialogues he participated in. However, on the other hand, he was unable to resolve the challenges faced by Afghan migrants in Iran.”
Aziz Maarij, another political analyst, stated: “He had a deep understanding of Afghan issues and established close relations with the people of Afghanistan. As a result, he was a successful diplomat and made significant contributions to expanding bilateral relations.”
This comes as Iran’s Foreign Minister dismissed Hassan Kazemi Qomi from his role as Special Representative and Acting Ambassador to Kabul two days ago, appointing Ali Reza Beigadli as the new Iranian Ambassador to Afghanistan.
