Uzbeks and Kazakhs heavy users of online educational services
Uzbeks and Kazakhs are among the most enthusiastic users of online educational courses in the world, according to a report prepared by the world’s largest providers of online instruction.
The Global Skills Report 2024, published by US-based Coursera, ranks Uzbekistan in the top spot and Kazakhstan in 18th place, in terms of online learners as a percentage of the labor force. According to Coursera data, roughly 6.25 percent of all Uzbek workers are using online educational services offered by Coursera, aiming to improve their skillsets. Just over 1 percent of the workforce in Kazakhstan is taking online courses that are designed to create “opportunities for individuals to adapt and succeed in the face of change,” the Coursera report states.
The large number of Uzbeks using online educational services coincides with a broad Uzbek government effort to promote job training to channel labor migrants into higher skilled positions in Europe and the Middle East, instead of working as unskilled laborers in Russia. Tashkent has signed several agreements so far in 2024 that established quotas for Uzbek labor migrants in Germany, Slovakia, the UK and other countries.
While lots of Uzbeks are using online resources, Coursera data, based on the performance of users on its platform, indicates that most Uzbeks demonstrate a low-level of proficiency in key skills, including accounting, communications, statistics, programming and other areas.
Coursera has over 148 million users globally offering courses from more than 300 universities and companies.
