Construction of Northern Corridor Road in Kandahar Continues
The Public Works Department of Kandahar stated that the construction of the Northern Corridor Road, with a cost of $120 million, is ongoing.
According to officials, the 209-kilometer road has reached 45% completion so far and will connect the northern districts of Kandahar to the city of Trinkot, the capital of Urozgan.
Azizul Rahman, head of the Public Works Department of Kandahar, said: “So far, 45% of the first phase of this project has been completed, and we hope the process will accelerate to make the project ready for use as soon as possible.”
Contractor company officials say that in addition to connecting Kandahar to Uruzgan, the road will eventually connect the southern provinces to the northern provinces through Daykundi and Bamyan.
Obaidul Rahman Baha, an engineer from the contractor company, said: “This project, known as the Northern Corridor, will connect Kandahar to Uruzgan, Daykundi, and ultimately to the northern provinces via Doshi Bamyan.”
Mohammad Rafiq Mengal, a contractor company official, said: “The tariff costs paid to the Ministry of Mines have not yet been invoiced by the Ministry of Finance. If this issue is resolved, our work will progress faster.”
Residents say that in addition to creating job opportunities, the project will also positively impact the region’s economic growth.
Abdul Khaliq, a resident of Arghandab district in Kandahar, said: “If this road is built, the problems of our elders and children will be solved. We faced many challenges day and night, and the elders and children were distressed and worried.”
Abdul Kabir, another resident of Arghandab, said: “I am very happy that the construction of this road has started, and soon, the reinforcement work will also begin.”
Officials from the Ministry of Public Works in the southern region emphasized that the project will be implemented to high standards and will provide significant transport and economic benefits for the region in the long term.
