Ghulam Yahya Herawi teaches calligraphy daily to several students. The goal of this effort is to promote calligraphy art and familiarize young people with the country’s ancient arts.

Zabihullah, one of the students, said: “The teachers have worked hard in the field of calligraphy, and we are also trying to make an effort in this area.”

Providing opportunities for participation in international exhibitions is one of the demands of Herat’s calligraphers.

According to them, the valuable calligraphy artworks of Afghan artists can showcase Afghanistan’s art on a global scale.

Jalil Ahmad Tawana, the head of Herat Calligraphers’ Association, said: “Ancient Herat has been the pioneer of calligraphy, miniature painting, and various other arts throughout history, and by God’s grace, this tradition continues to this day.”

According to the artists, Herat is the birthplace of many Islamic and renowned scripts such as Nasta’liq, Shekasta Nasta’liq, Naskh, and Kufi.

These scripts emerged in various historical periods, flourished particularly during the Timurid golden age, and have survived to this day.
