Blood Donations Save Lives of Thalassemia Patients in Nangarhar

Around 26,000 people have donated blood at Nangarhar Regional Hospital over the past year.

Officials from the province’s Public Health Directorate have stated that the donated blood has been used to treat 13,000 patients suffering from thalassemia.

Noorzad Khan Hemat, head of the blood bank at Nangarhar Regional Hospital, said: “So far, we have distributed blood to 13,400 thalassemia patients. Depending on each patient’s condition, we collect 250, 400, or even 500 cc of blood from donors.”

Sediqullah Rahimi, a doctor in Nangarhar, stated: “Donating blood helps prevent high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and strokes.”

Meanwhile, several thalassemia patients in the province have called on other citizens to assist them by donating blood.

Arafat, who has long struggled with a lack of blood, says he is forced to visit the hospital every two weeks to replenish his blood supply. He warns that if blood is not provided on time, his life is at risk.

about his illness, Arafat said: “I am suffering a lot. My body is weak, my entire body aches and even blood flows from my mouth. I am facing many challenges.”

“I have anemia. Please give me blood and save my life. I need blood, and I come here twice a week to get it,” said Omar Khan, another patient.

On the other hand, volunteers who visited Nangarhar Regional Hospital have urged other young people to help save patients’ lives by donating blood.

“When I entered the regional hospital, I saw more than 20 women holding blood request forms, desperately in need of blood. A small amount of our blood can save their lives,” said Sabghatullah Hotak, a resident of Nangarhar.

According to doctors, individuals under 18, those suffering from hepatitis B or C, AIDS, tuberculosis, cancer, and other infectious diseases, and people over 60 years old cannot donate blood.
