Islamic Emirate Hopes for US-Afghan Prisoners’ Release Agreement
The Islamic Emirate stated that the interim government is striving to secure the release of all Afghan prisoners held in the United States and one Afghan prisoner remaining in Guantanamo Bay.
Islamic Emirate spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has expressed hope that the interim government will reach an agreement with the United States in this regard.
Mujahid said: “The Islamic Emirate wants the release of all Afghans imprisoned in the United States and the one Afghan still remaining in Guantanamo. Efforts are ongoing, and we hope that if an agreement is reached, they will also be released.”
Previously, the Associated Press reported that a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council stated that Donald Trump wants the release of all Americans detained in Afghanistan.
A US Congress member has also called for the release of other American citizens from Afghanistan.
Congressman Gregory Meeks stated: “While we celebrate Ryan and William’s release, we must remember the other Americans who remain wrongfully detained and held hostage in Afghanistan and around the world. We cannot rest until they are all brought home safely to their families, and I hope the new Administration will place as high a priority on securing their release as the last.”
Some political analysts believe that the prisoner exchange holds great significance at the start of negotiations between Kabul and Washington.
“I think the US has chosen the path of engagement through prisoner exchange, and with Trump’s return, there is hope that they will advance relations with Afghanistan through interaction rather than confrontation and conflict,” Sadiq Hamidzoi, a political analyst, told .
This comes as a recent prisoner swap, mediated by Qatar, saw the exchange of an Afghan prisoner for two American citizens.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate also stressed in a statement that it views US actions aimed at normalizing relations between the two countries positively.
