Ministry Distributes 45,000 Tons of Improved Seeds to Farmers Nationwide
This year, nearly 45,000 tons of improved seeds have been distributed among farmers in all 34 provinces of the country.
Misbahuddin Mustaeen, spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, stated that to promote and mechanize agriculture in the country, the ministry has also distributed 100,000 tons of chemical fertilizer to farmers.
Mustaeen said: “This year, up to 45,000 metric tons of improved seeds and approximately 100,000 tons of chemical fertilizer have been distributed in 34 provinces of Afghanistan, and this process is still ongoing.”
Some farmers have expressed concerns about the lack of alternative crops and have called on aid organizations to assist in this regard.
Salam Jan, a farmer, said: “Foreign countries promised us alternative crops to opium, but we have not received any so far. They should provide us with alternative crops and support us.”
On the other hand, the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock considers supporting farmers a key responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and emphasizes that extensive programs should be implemented to achieve self-sufficiency.
Mirwais Hajizadeh, deputy head of the Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, said: “Afghanistan is an agricultural country and needs improved seeds. The more support is provided to farmers, the less we will need Kazakh and Uzbek flour. Our domestic production is beneficial for everyone.”
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock, Afghanistan requires 6.9 million metric tons of wheat annually, while this year’s wheat production has reached 5 million metric tons.
