Restoration of National Archives Reaches 40%: Ministry

Officials from the Ministry of Information and Culture said that the restoration work of the National Archives of Afghanistan has progressed to 40%.

The purpose of this restoration is to protect historical documents and the existing collections in the National Archives from damage caused by climate change.

The National Archives of Afghanistan, recognized as a treasure trove of the country’s historical documents, was originally built over 130 years ago by Shah Abdul Rahman Khan as a guesthouse for his son, Amir Habibullah Khan.

“This project, which includes the restoration and preservation of historical artifacts, the renovation of deteriorating buildings, and improvements to the infrastructure of the National Archives, will be completed in about six months at a cost of 4.6 million Afghanis. So far, 40% of the work has been completed,” stated Khobaib Ghufran, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The restoration work on this complex began more than two months ago by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Najibullah Bahad, a university professor, spoke about the importance of this center, saying: “The National Archives essentially safeguard historical artifacts, and restoring and displaying these items is of great significance to the public and tourists.”

Some cultural figures consider the restoration of the National Archives a significant step in preserving Afghanistan’s historical documents.

“The National Archives of Afghanistan, the National Radio and Television Archives, and the Kabul Public Library are among the most important cultural, historical, and literary repositories of the country,” stated Faqir Maiwand, a former advisor to the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The National Archives of Afghanistan houses manuscripts adorned with gold and lapis lazuli, historical documents, and antique items such as the desk, chairs, and cabinets of Amir Abdul Rahman Khan, which hold great historical value.
