Recent Floods in Country Claim Nearly 40 Lives

As a result of heavy rainfall and devastating floods in several provinces, nearly 40 people have lost their lives, and 40 others have been injured.

These natural disasters have occurred in the provinces of Farah, Helmand, and Kandahar.

Janan Saiq, spokesperson for the Ministry for Disaster Management, stated: “Due to these natural disasters across the country, 36 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives, and 40 others have been injured. A total of 240 houses have been completely destroyed, while 61 houses have been partially damaged. Additionally, hundreds of acres of agricultural land have been ruined.”

Victims of these floods told that they have lost everything and are in urgent need of assistance.

“Strong winds and heavy rain hit us. My cousin was martyred when a door frame collapsed on him. Our solar panels and those of our relatives are all broken,” Musa Jan, a resident of Farah, told .

“The storm and hail have caused us significant damage. They have broken our solar panels, knocked down walls, destroyed trees, and caused a lot of losses,” said Tayeb Jan, another resident of Farah.

Mohammad Sadiq Jahanmal, the district governor of Farahrod in Farah province, stated: “We do not yet have precise figures. The area is mountainous, mobile networks do not work, roads are blocked, and rivers are overflowing. People from those areas have not been able to reach the center to report their losses.”

Devastating floods and storms have also claimed 17 lives in Kandahar and Helmand provinces, injuring nearly 20 others.

Two engineers from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum are among the victims, as floods swept them away in Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar.

Shir Mohammad Wahdat, head of information at the Kandahar department of Information and Culture, stated: “During the recent rains in Helmand province, including Lashkargah city and the districts of Musa Qala, Gereshk, Babaji, Nahr-e-Saraj, Sangin, and Washer, six people were killed, ten others were injured, and 1,500 solar panels were destroyed.”

Powerful floods have also struck both sides of the Bakhshabad Dam tunnel in Farah province, leaving workers trapped inside.

Former President Hamid Karzai, in response to the deaths of dozens of people in these natural disasters, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and urged humanitarian organizations and national businessmen to provide immediate assistance.
