UNDP Launches Appeal for Earthquake Victims

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced that in the coming days it will launch an urgent appeal to mobilize assistance for families affected by the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

The UNDP representative in Afghanistan expressed concern over the aftermath of the recent earthquake, stating that the organization will soon issue an emergency appeal to secure essential resources.

Stephen Rodriguez, UNDP’s representative in Afghanistan, said: “We will launch an emergency appeal in the coming days. I believe OCHA has mentioned September 8, and we call on member states and partners to act as quickly as possible.”

Rodriguez, referring to the recent earthquake in the east of the country, added that UNDP is working to provide health assistance, as well as temporary and permanent shelters for affected communities.
He further noted that an initial aid package worth $8 million has been planned to support the recovery of the victims’ lives.

Rodriguez also stated: “For UNDP, we have made an initial assessment of $8 million for the work we intend to do, which includes the reconstruction of shelters, provision of both temporary and permanent housing, rehabilitation of certain roads, and supplying these families with new forms of energy, among other needs. However, this is only a small part of the bigger picture.”

It is worth mentioning that the United Kingdom, Qatar, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, Russia, Japan, China, and Iran have already provided emergency aid to those affected by last week’s earthquake.
