Underground Market Inaugurated in Kabul Worth 281M AFN

An underground market was inaugurated in Pul-e-Khishti, Kabul. 

Officials from the Kabul Municipality said that the construction of the market cost 281 million Afghanis.

At the opening ceremony, Mohammad Khalid Sajistani, Deputy for Urban Services at Kabul Municipality, stated: “This contract has been signed with a private company for 30 years. Sixty-five percent of the market’s revenue will go to the private company, while 35 percent will go to Kabul Municipality.”

According to representatives of the contracting company, the underground market has been built in line with modern standards, using advanced materials. It includes six entrance gates and around 340 shops.

They added that during the construction phase, about 1,000 people were directly employed, while between 3,000 and 4,000 others were indirectly provided with work related to the project.

Company representative Maiwand said: “As you know, public and private projects help increase employment opportunities. This also shows good coordination and close cooperation between the private sector and the government.”

Khan Jan Alokozai, a former board member of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said: “Since the coming of the Islamic Emirate, the government and private sector have been working shoulder to shoulder for the country’s reconstruction with very limited resources.”

Kabul Municipality officials also emphasized the importance of developmental projects, adding that currently, around 200 construction projects are underway in the capital.
