Bamiyan Hosts Art Exhibition Honoring Kamaluddin Behzad

An art exhibition has been organized in Bamiyan in the name of the renowned Afghan artist Kamaluddin Behzad.

Dozens of artworks by Bamiyan artists were showcased at the event.

Artists say the exhibition celebrates UNESCO’s recent recognition of Behzad’s miniature painting style as part of Afghanistan’s intangible cultural heritage, and aims to help preserve this traditional art form.

Ghulam Hussain Akhlaqi, an artist in Bamiyan, said: “Ustad Kamaluddin Behzad’s style, after a long pause, has now been registered with UNESCO as part of Afghanistan’s artistic and cultural heritage. That’s why, along with many other artists, we organized this exhibition as our responsibility.”

Another artist, Sayed Reza Musawi, said: “Our exhibition today honors Ustad Behzad’s style. Artists have brought many works here, with the aim of preserving and promoting art.”

UNESCO’s inclusion of Behzad’s innovative miniature artwork in its list of intangible world cultural heritage under Afghanistan’s name is seen as a key step in safeguarding the country’s traditional arts.

Matin Mubarez, another Bamiyan artist, said: “A group of artists organized this exhibition because Behzad’s artworks have now been registered, which is a major achievement for the artistic community and a strong step toward the growth and preservation of art.”

At the same time, local authorities in Bamiyan say they are committed to supporting the growth of painting, calligraphy, and related arts in the province.

Sayed Mustafa Saleh, Director of Information and Culture in Bamiyan, said: “There are large art education centers active in Bamiyan, with many students learning calligraphy and painting. We fully support art and artists.”

It’s worth noting that last month, UNESCO officially registered Kamaluddin Behzad’s miniature painting style in its list of intangible cultural heritage. This recognition was praised by many artists and cultural figures as a significant achievement for Afghanistan.
