EU, Belgium Reach Deal with Islamic Emirate on Migrant Identification

Belgium’s state media has reported that representatives from Belgium and 20 other European countries, during a visit to Kabul, reached an agreement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to cooperate in identifying the identities of migrants in Europe who are accused of crimes.

The media added that for the purpose of these discussions, the head of Belgium’s immigration office traveled to Afghanistan last week along with representatives from 20 other EU member states.

According to the report, during the talks, the Islamic Emirate agreed to cooperate in identifying individuals who are considered criminals by these countries.

Moeen Gul Samkani, a political analyst, said: “Previously, other European countries, including Germany, have done this. In my opinion, both countries, Afghanistan and Belgium, need such coordination and relations to resolve issues like this.”

Reports indicate that Belgium and other EU member states intend to resume the process of deporting rejected asylum seekers and those without residency permits, including Afghans who have been convicted of crimes.

However, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not yet commented on this matter.

Javid Sadaqat, a migrant rights activist, stated: “European countries are trying to make the deportation process appear legal by distinguishing between criminal and non-criminal asylum seekers. If Belgium or any other country proceeds with this, they risk violating their international responsibilities.”

In recent months, the issue of deporting Afghan migrants accused of crimes from European countries has become prominent. On October 6 last year, a delegation from Germany’s Interior Ministry also traveled to Kabul to discuss the matter with officials from the Islamic Emirate.
