Pakistan is still in no hurry to recognize the Taliban

Pakistan’s foreign minister has said that the country is still in no hurry to recognize the Taliban government.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was quoted as saying by Sputnik yesterday that the country was still monitoring the Taliban and was in no hurry to recognize the group’s government.

“Pakistan has not recognized the Taliban and we are examining the situation in our neighbor,” he said. “The Taliban have declared a caretaker government, but so far no one is in a hurry to recognize them.”

“If nothing is done, this is exactly what will happen,” he said, stressing that preventing a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan was a priority. “Pakistan will face the consequences immediately, but the West will eventually pay for it.”

“I think the best way is international engagement, not international isolation. Isolation will have consequences that we do not want and will not help Afghanistan and the region,” he added.
