United Nations: Afghan people face food insecurity

UN officials have warned of a possible humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, saying its people are experiencing indescribable food insecurity and malnutrition.

Ramiz Al-Kabrov, the UN’s humanitarian co-ordinator for Afghanistan, said in a statement yesterday that the number of acute famines in Afghanistan had risen from 14 million in January to 23 million in March.

“95 percent of Afghans do not get enough food, which is 100 percent for women heads of households,” Al-Kabrov said. “However, destructively, this is a bitter reality.”

According to him, the rate of acute malnutrition is high in 28 provinces of Afghanistan and more than 3.5 million children in these provinces need nutritional support.
