European Union: The Taliban’s blockade of schools is a clear violation of children’s right to education

Emphasizing the immediate reopening of girls ‘schools by the Taliban, the EU foreign policy chief said the group’s move to block girls’ schools in Afghanistan was a clear violation of the fundamental right of children to education.

“No religious or social reason can justify such unequal treatment, which is a clear violation of the fundamental right of children to education,” EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said yesterday, condemning the Taliban’s move to block girls’ schools in Afghanistan.

He said the decision had pushed the Taliban back from their previous commitments, undermining their chances of gaining internal legitimacy as well as their credibility with other countries.

He also warned that the current decision by the Taliban to keep girls’ high schools closed would have far-reaching consequences.

Assuring Afghan women of the union’s unwavering support, Borrell added: “Educating girls is essential for the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in Afghan society.”
