UNESCO calls for immediate reopening of girls’ schools in Afghanistan

UNESCO representatives from 50 countries, including Britain and Finland, called for the immediate reopening of schools for girls in Afghanistan.

The meeting, held today (Thursday), in which UNESCO representatives expressed support for the right of girls and women to education in Afghanistan and called for the immediate reopening of schools for girls by the Taliban.

Calling for the immediate reopening of schools for girls in Afghanistan, the British envoy said the 200-day ban on girls’ education was a long time.

Earlier, the Permanent Representatives of Norway, Albania, Brazil, France, Gabon, Ireland, Mexico, Britain, the United States and the United Arab Emirates issued a joint statement in UN Security Council  called on the Taliban government to open schools for all girls and boys and to ensure a safe learning environment for all children and young people in Afghanistan.
