A mortar shell exploded in Nangarhar, killing a child

Local officials in Nangarhar say a child has been killed in a mortar shell blast in the province.

According to Salam Watandar, according to the sources, the incident took place this morning in Mriz area of Haskah-e-Mina district of Nangarhar.

The sources said the sound of the blast was very loud, adding that the incident took place when a child was carrying a mortar shell with him when it exploded.

According to them, the mother of this child was also injured in this explosion.

Earlier, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concern about the increase in child casualties from the explosion of unexploded ordnance left over from the war in Afghanistan.

The agency said in a statement that 301 Afghan children had been killed and wounded in the past seven months as a result of the explosion of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Afghanistan.
