SIGAR: The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated since the Taliban took control

The US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) says the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated since the Taliban took control.

The 55th Quarterly Cigarette Report, sent to the US Congress and released yesterday, states that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated since the Taliban took control.

The report quoted the State Department’s Humanitarian Intelligence Unit as saying that more than 24.4 million people in Afghanistan needed humanitarian assistance after the Taliban took control of the country, up from before the Taliban came to power it reached 18.4 million people.

According to the report, the total number of unemployed people after the Taliban rule is estimated at between 700,000 and 900,000 by mid-2022.

Earlier, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that millions of Afghans had fled their homes to find adequate food and shelter, and that strong support from donors was vital.
