UN Special Rapporteur arrives in Afghanistan

The UN Human Rights Council has announced the 11-day visit of its Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan.
Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, said that during the visit he will met with interim officials and a wide range of Afghan stakeholders to review and assess the human rights situation, including the implementation of internationally mandated human rights instruments.
The visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan began on May 15 and is scheduled to end on May 26.
Bennett also said he would meet with senior Afghan interim officials, representatives of national and international civil society, and members of the diplomatic community, as well as conduct field research to gather first-hand information.
He added that he was going to submit his findings to the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly.
The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights is traveling to Afghanistan as the human rights situation in the country deteriorates since the Taliban took control.
Since taking control of Afghanistan, the group has imposed severe restrictions on human rights, including the rights of women and girls.
