US hands over Afghan prisoner to Taliban

The US government has handed over an Afghan prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay to the Taliban.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, tweeted that an Afghan prisoner named Assadullah Harun, who was being held at US Guantanamo Bay, had returned home as a result of the Taliban government’s positive interaction with the United States.

He added that the Qatari government had arranged for the release of the prisoner and that Taliban officials were working to repatriate Afghans imprisoned in other countries for various crimes.

Assadullah Harun was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for 15 years for collaborating with al-Qaeda, and US forces have identified him as an al-Qaeda courier.
