Khalilzad: Instead of fighting against the Taliban, Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former representative of the US in Afghanistan peace affairs, says that Ghani chose to flee instead of fighting against the Taliban.

Mr. Khalilzad, in a statement, compared Ashraf Ghani with the president of Ukraine and said that instead of fighting against the Taliban, Ghani fled from Afghanistan and his unwillingness to sacrifice and his mismanagement of the army led to the downfall of the government and the country.

He said: “The president of Ukraine could say that because NATO did not come to our defense, I had to leave the country.” But he accepted the responsibility of defending the homeland and sacrifice.”

Khalilzad denied the accusations of his conspiracy with the Taliban and pointed to the failure of Afghan leaders in the success of intra-Afghan negotiations in the formation of the government.

Khalilzad made these statements while the American Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) recently said in a report that the ethnicization of politics by Ashraf Ghani led to the collapse of the Afghan army and paved the way for the Taliban to gain power.
