Canadian Foreign Ministry Praises Qatar’s Mediation in Lavery’s Release
Suhail Shaheen, confirming the release of David Lavery, the former Canadian soldier, stated that he was arrested in Afghanistan for violating the law.
However, based on the Islamic Emirate’s positive approach to resolving issues peacefully, he was released through Qatar’s mediation.
Suhail Shaheen, the Islamic Emirate’s acting ambassador to Qatar, said: “David Lavery, who was detained due to certain violations, has been released through the mediation of our friendly country, Qatar, and the Islamic Emirate’s positive engagement in resolving matters peacefully.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also praised Qatar’s mediation in this matter and added that Lavery has now arrived in Qatar and is in good condition.
The Canadian Foreign Minister added: “I just spoke with David Lavery upon his safe arrival in Qatar from Afghanistan. He is in good spirits. Thank you to my Qatari counterpart, for helping facilitate the release of our Canadian citizen.”
Mohammad Aslam Danishmal, a political analyst, told : “These are initial steps that must be taken by both sides and should be expedited. Mediating countries are also expected to further facilitate engagement and dialogue.”
Wahed Faqiri, an international relations analyst, said: “The release of several Americans and now a Canadian citizen by the Taliban indicates that the Taliban are trying to repair and improve their relations with Western countries.”
According to reports, David Lavery was arrested in Afghanistan about two months ago, in November.
