Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, has said that investigations are underway regarding the shooting incident near the UNAMA office in Kabul.
Stephane Dujarric also emphasized that no shots were fired by UNAMA guards during the incident.
Regarding the event, the UN spokesperson added: ” Often when people do shoot at us, it’s hard to figure out what their motives are. But I can confirm to you that there were shots fired at the UN observation post, what we call the UN operations centre in Kabul, which is our compound. No shots were fired by UN guards. And as a result, movement and access to the compound have now been restored. We are looking into this incident to get more details.”
The Ministry of Interior said on Monday that one person was killed and another was injured as a result of the shooting.
The UNAMA office was established in 2001 primarily to coordinate the UN’s political activities in Afghanistan. It also houses agencies, funds, and development and humanitarian assistance programs across various sectors.
Janat Faheem Chakari, a political affairs expert, spoke about UNAMA’s responsibilities, saying: “One of UNAMA’s key responsibilities is to maintain Afghanistan’s political, economic, and humanitarian relations, serving as a bridge between Afghanistan and the world. Ensuring their security is essential, and necessary facilities should be provided. Those recruited should be thoroughly vetted to prevent any potential issues.”
The Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirate also announced yesterday that a delegation had been sent to investigate the incident, but the findings have not yet been made public.
