Ministry of Public Works: Survey and Design of 1,207 km of Roads Underway

The Ministry of Public Works has announced that in 1403 Solar Year, the survey and design of approximately 1,207 kilometers of roads in Afghanistan is currently underway.

According to the ministry, the survey of several projects, including the Wakhan Corridor and the Ghorband-Doshi road, has been completed.

Officials also emphasized that major road construction and infrastructure projects are ongoing, with significant progress made in various sectors.

Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Works, stated: “Our teams at the ministry’s headquarters have surveyed and designed around 1,207 kilometers of roads. The survey work for most of these roads has been completed, and they are now in the design phase.”

The ministry’s technical deputy mentioned that the Qaisar-Laman ring road project is considered one of the key projects, with its first phase set to begin in exchange for the chromite mine in Parwan province.

Ongoing Road Construction Projects Include:

  • Kandahar-Uruzgan Highway
  • Kabul-Kandahar Highway
  • Salang Highways
  • Second lane of Kabul-Ghazni Road
  • Second lane of Kabul-Jalalabad Highway
  • Herat-Chisht Sharif Road
  • Dasht-e-Archi-Kunduz Road
  • Second lane of Kandahar-Spin Boldak Road
  • Signing of five contracts for the Herat-Kandahar railway, valued at 264 million afghanis
  • Construction of the connecting road between Maidan Wardak and Logar, valued at over 713 million afghanis

Abdul Karim Fateh, technical deputy of the Ministry of Public Works, said: “The survey and design of two sections of this project have been completed this year. In one of these sections, the construction of a 25-kilometer road, valued at over 1.4 billion afghanis, will be contracted to Noorzi Confidence Construction and Road-Building Company in exchange for the chromite mine in Parwan province.”

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Works further announced that the maintenance project for the Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif route has achieved 80% progress. However, due to remaining repairs at certain stations, the contract for this project has been extended for another six months with Uzbekistan’s railway authority.

Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas said: “To strengthen transit cooperation with neighboring countries, we have extended the four-party corridor agreement between Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China until 2025.”

Additionally, over the past ten months, nearly 3.5 million metric tons of goods have been transported via four railway corridors:

  • Hairatan
  • Aqina
  • Torghundi
  • Khaf-Herat

At present, work on nearly 50 other road construction projects is also ongoing.
