Poultry Sector Expands in Kandahar After Trade Disruptions

Chick production in Kandahar has increased by 42 percent following the closure of trade routes with Pakistan.
Officials say there are currently four active chick production factories in Kandahar, producing around two million chicks every month.
Mohammad Idris, head of a chick production farm, said: “We call for support so that our production can increase and domestic demand in this sector can be met within the country.”
Farm worker Mohammad Abid said: “We are very happy that such job opportunities are available in the country and that we have our own domestic production.”
Officials expect that within the next three years, Kandahar will reach self-sufficiency in this sector.
Mohammad Hanif Haqmal, spokesperson for the Kandahar Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, said: “Since last year, chick production has increased by 42 percent, and we are hopeful that these figures will rise further in the future.”
Officials from the department added that, in addition to chick production, there are also 1,200 active poultry and egg production farms in the districts of Daman, Arghandab, Zhari, Khakrez and Arghistan. Their products are supplied not only to the southern region but also to other provinces of the country.
