Amnesty: Pakistan Airstrike on Kabul Hospital May Be a War Crime
Amnesty International has announced that at least 269 civilians were killed in Pakistan’s airstrike on the Omid rehabilitation center in Kabul, saying the attack should be investigated as a possible war crime.
The organization stressed that the Pakistani military has provided no verifiable evidence to support its claim that the facility was being used to store military equipment or for any other military purposes.
Isabelle Lassee, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for South Asia, said: ” The attack on the Omid Centre constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law – possibly amounting to a war crime. The organization found no evidence to support the Pakistan military’s claims that Omid Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre was being used to store weapons and ammunition or for other military purposes at the time of the attack. Given the widely available information that the site had been used as a medical facility for more than a decade, this reflects a major failure in military planning by Pakistan that led to a significant loss of civilian life.”
More than four months have passed since Pakistan’s overnight airstrike on the Omid treatment camp.
Although the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has also confirmed 269 deaths and more than 120 injuries resulting from the attack, no international or human rights organization, including the United Nations, has so far launched an investigation into the deadly incident.
Imam Jan, the father of one of the victims, said: “They had gone to this camp hoping to receive treatment, but this oppressive country bombed them. We call on all organizations, especially the UN Security Council, to investigate this crime and ensure that everyone responsible is held accountable.”
On March 17, 2026, Pakistani warplanes carried out a nighttime airstrike on the Omid rehabilitation center in Kabul. According to official figures, more than 400 people were killed and over 265 others were injured in the attack.
