US Republican Senator: US troops remain in Afghanistan until conditions are right

Indonesia Graham, a Republican U.S. senator, told CBS News that U.S. forces would not leave Afghanistan until conditions were right.

He welcomed the Biden administration’s stance that US troops would remain in Afghanistan longer than set out in the Doha agreement.

He added that US troops may remain in Afghanistan until May and will not leave until appropriate conditions are in place.

According to the Doha agreement, US troops should withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of May this year, but a report commissioned by the US Congress recently recommended that the deadline for US troops to leave Afghanistan be postponed.

The Taliban have reacted sharply to the report, saying it would have dangerous consequences if US forces did not withdraw from Afghanistan within the deadline set in the Doha agreement.
