Sixteen army personnel were killed in clashes with the Taliban in Herat

Sources in Herat say clashes broke out between Taliban fighters and security forces in the Chesht district of the province last night.

The source, who did not want to be named, said Taliban fighters had attacked a security checkpoint near Salma Dam, killing 16 soldiers.

According to the source, dozens of Taliban insurgents have surrounded the Chesht district, and the district could fall if no reinforcements are sent to the district.
