UN Envoy for Afghanistan: A catastrophic situation has arisen in Afghanistan

The UN envoy to Afghanistan has said that a catastrophic situation has arisen in Afghanistan and that there is no money in the country and food prices are rising.

“There is a catastrophic situation in Afghanistan, there is no money, food is becoming more expensive, the international community and many donors,” said Deborah Lewens, the UN special envoy for Afghanistan, in a report to the Security Council. “They have stopped the flow of money for fear of falling into the hands of the Taliban.”

He added that if Afghanistan’s budget is not resumed, the country will be in a critical economic situation, which will cause many people to flee the country and some to live in poverty and hunger.

“Many members of the Taliban cabinet are under UN sanctions, including the prime minister, two deputy prime ministers and the foreign minister,” he said, referring to a statement from the Taliban cabinet.

“You have to decide what to do with the sanctions list and how to communicate with them,” he added.
