UNHCR: The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is still depressing

According to Deutsche Welle, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has said that if Afghanistan’s civil service and economy collapse, the country will face greater misery and instability.

“The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is still depressing,” said Filiu Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “If the civil service and the economy of this country collapse, then we will see greater misery, instability and more displacement inside and outside the country.”

Even before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, he said, more than 18 million Afghans, who make up half of the country’s population, had needed humanitarian assistance.

Earlier this week, UN Secretary-General Antio Guterres said at a conference in Geneva that poverty and hunger had skyrocketed since the Taliban arrived in Afghanistan and that Afghans were likely to face the most dangerous hours of their lives.

More than $ 1.2 billion in aid has been pledged to Afghanistan at the Geneva Conference to End Human Poverty in Afghanistan.
