The United States has insisted on continuing economic sanctions against the Taliban

The US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury said at a Senate Banking Committee hearing yesterday that continued economic sanctions against the Taliban were necessary, but that there was a need to find legitimate ways to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

“Under no circumstances will we allow the Taliban to gain access to money belonging to the Afghan people,” Deputy Treasury Secretary Adimo said at the meeting.

The United States has frozen nearly 10 billion Afghan assets since the Taliban took control of the country, and US officials have said that any decision regarding the future government of Afghanistan and the release of these funds depends on the Taliban.
