Russia’s envoy to the United Nations: The Taliban are recognized when they live up to their commitments

According to Reuters, Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, said the issue of recognizing the Taliban government will arose when they will fulfilled their commitments.

“The issue of recognition arises when the international community is assured that the promises and commitments made by Taliban officials are being fulfilled,” Russia’s envoy to the United Nations told a news conference yesterday.

Nebenzia also referred to the appointment of Soheil Shaheen, spokesman for the Taliban’s political bureau in Qatar, as the group’s representative to the United Nations, saying that a representative of a country would be given a credential when the government of that country was recognized.

“UN sanctions against Taliban leaders should be considered, but not immediately,” he said of the sanctions imposed on the Taliban.

However, the Taliban government, which the group calls temporary, has not yet been recognized by any country.
