The Red Cross called for immediate action to strengthen Afghanistan’s economy

The director general of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called on donor countries to take immediate action to strengthen Afghanistan’s economy and prevent the collapse of its public services.
Robert Mardini, director general of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), tweeted urging donors to take immediate action to boost Afghanistan’s economy, saying it would stand by the Afghan people because the future is uncertain.
Meanwhile, the director general of the International Committee of the Red Cross and a delegation of representatives of a number of UN relief agencies have recently traveled to Afghanistan to review the humanitarian situation in the country.
The delegation said in a report that more than 24 million people, or about 59 percent of Afghanistan’s population, were in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
“The enormity of the human suffering and the urgent needs of the Afghan people was evident in what we saw and in the people we spoke to during our mission,” said Reina Gialni, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. “But it was also clear that the donors were also fully committed to providing principled and unconditional humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.”
