The United Nations called on the international community to take action to prevent the Afghan economy from collapsing

The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan called on the international community to take action to prevent the country’s economy from collapsing irreversibly.

Deborah Lyons, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, told a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan that the international community must take action to prevent the country’s economy from collapsing.

“Afghanistan’s economy is very important now,” he told the gathering. “Providing short-term aid by giving hope or preparing a solid foundation for Afghanistan’s self-sufficiency is not.”

“The situation is approaching an irreversible point,” said the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan.

He also called on the international community to engage with the current rulers of Afghanistan, saying it would be difficult to help the Afghan people without engaging with the current government.

However, the Taliban government, which the group calls interim, has not yet been recognized by any country.
