Pakistan’s Representative to UN: If there is a consensus among the countries in the region, we will recognize the Taliban government

Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations has said he recognizes the Taliban government in Kabul only when countries in the region in particular have a consensus.

Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, raised the issue of recognizing the Taliban government on Thursday when the UN Security Council voted to extend its mission in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, the Pakistani Dawn news agency reported.

He said the UN resolution adopted on Thursday had one drawback: “There is no mention of the actual government in Afghanistan”, although it did mention the need to co-operate with relevant authorities.

Asked if the UN vote would affect Pakistan’s position on the issue, Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations said: “When there is a consensus, especially among the countries in the region, We will do it (recognition).”

However, although Pakistan was the first country to call for more flexibility in dealing with the Taliban, Islamabad has not recognized the Taliban government.

According to Dan News Agency, Afghanistan’s six close neighbors will meet in China next month, and recognizing the Taliban government will be one of the main topics on their agenda.

According to report China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will attend the meeting, which will be attended by a delegation from the Taliban.
