UNICEF: 13 million children in Afghanistan are in need of international assistance

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that more than 13 million children in Afghanistan are currently in need of international assistance.

A statement from the agency said today that nearly 4 million children in Afghanistan have dropped out of school and that more than 13 million more children in the country are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Noting that 8 out of 10 people in Afghanistan drink water contaminated with bacteria, UNICEF Communications Director Sam Mort called on humanitarian donors to provide $ 2 billion as soon as possible to provide educational and health services to Afghan children.

It also called on families in Afghanistan yesterday to prepare their eligible children for the new school year before schools reopen.
