Guterrres: Suspension of girls’ education harms Afghanistan

The UN Secretary-General says the suspension of girls’ education in Afghanistan is seriously damaging.

In a tweet, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lamented the Taliban’s blocking of schools for girls over sixth grade in Afghanistan, saying the move would seriously damage Afghanistan.

“Protecting the rights of Afghan women and girls saves children from starvation and communities from poverty,” she wrote.

According to the UN Secretary-General, the suspension of girls’ education in Afghanistan is an unjustifiable human rights violation.

Earlier, the Taliban Ministry of Education announced that schools for girls over the sixth grade in the country would be closed by the ministry until further notice.

Although the Taliban’s move provoked domestic and international reactions, schools in Afghanistan are still not open to girls.
