Talks Held on Transfer of Afghan Prisoners from Iran
Mohammad Yousuf Mistry, Director General of the Prison Affairs Administration, held talks with an Iranian delegation regarding the process of transferring Afghan prisoners from Iran to Afghanistan.
According to officials from the Prison Affairs Administration, during the meeting, the Iranian delegation emphasized their commitment to continuing the transfer of Afghan prisoners based on existing agreements within the framework of bilateral cooperation.
The Director General of the Prison Affairs Administration also called on Tehran to facilitate visits by media outlets, international organizations, and the Red Cross to monitor the situation of Afghan prisoners in Iran.
Mohammad Naseem Lalahand, spokesperson for the Prison Affairs Administration, stated: “They (the Iranian delegation) said, ‘We will strive, in line with our cooperation agreements, to continue the transfer of Afghan prisoners and collaborate with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in this regard as needed.'”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations told that there are currently around 8,000 Afghan prisoners in Iranian jails.
Abdul Matlub Haqqani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations, said: “We have about 8,000 prisoners in Iran and approximately 10,000 in Pakistan. Considering the large number of Afghan migrants, this figure is relatively small.”
Mohammad Khan Talebi, an activist in migrant rights, said: “According to international laws and the agreements between the two countries, these prisoners should be transferred to their home country to serve their sentences.”
Previously, the acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriations had also discussed creating a joint strategy with the Iranian delegation to prevent illegal migration.
