Regional Efforts to Resolve Tensions Between Kabul, Islamabad

Following the failure of the third round of talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan, a delegation of senior Turkish officials is scheduled to visit Islamabad this week.
Turkey has said the purpose of this visit is to finalize a ceasefire agreement between Kabul and Islamabad.
Although the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has not yet commented on the matter, the former U.S. special envoy for Afghan peace expressed optimism that an agreement between Afghanistan and Pakistan could be reached to prevent further conflict.
Zalmay Khalilzad said: “I am hopeful and optimistic that a mediated agreement can be arrived at between Afghanistan and Pakistan and a return to war will be avoided.”
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry expressed concern about any tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan, warning that insecurity along Iran’s eastern borders could affect the security of the entire region.
Ismail Baghaei also added that Tehran is ready to cooperate in resolving the issue and preventing further escalation between Kabul and Islamabad.
Baghaei stated: “We once again declare our readiness, and if both parties agree, we will certainly spare no effort to improve the situation.”
It remains to be seen whether these regional efforts will ultimately lead to resolving the tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
