Deadly Floods Killed 148, Injured 216 in Afghanistan

Flooding across the country has caused both human and financial losses.
The National Disaster Management Authority says that since the 28th of March, 148 people have died and 216 others have been injured due to floods, earthquakes, and house collapses in various provinces.
According to the authority’s data, in just the past 24 hours, 15 people have died and 18 others have been injured in 20 provinces.
The agency’s spokesperson also stated that more than 6,000 houses have been completely or partially destroyed.
Yousuf Hamad, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Authority, said: “Since the 6th of Hamal, due to rainfall, floods, earthquakes, house collapses, and landslides, 148 people have died, 216 have been injured, and 8 others are missing.”
The Ministry of Public Works also announced the reopening of the Salang Highway to traffic and the Kabul–Jalalabad highway for travel.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has forecast rainfall in various provinces over the next two days.
According to the department, in some provinces the rainfall will be accompanied by thunderstorms and flash floods.
Mohammad Nasim Muradi, head of meteorology, said: “Rain is forecast in parts of the western, northwestern, northeastern, and southeastern regions, including central areas of the country.”
However, what should be done to prevent flood-related damage?
Najibullah Sadid, an environmental expert, said: “Most houses in Afghanistan are made of mud, and continued rainfall weakens their foundations, increasing the risk of collapse. It is important that people move to mosques or safe places if their homes become damp.”
This comes as the authority reported just yesterday that 22 people were killed and 32 others injured in flooding and rainfall within a 24-hour period.
